On June 29, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) were the ceremonial last two participants to make up one million people who submitted postcards urging the President to take more action on the genocide occuring in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The Million Voices for Darfur campaign aims to get Congress to give more aid to Darfur, as well as deploy a UN peacekeeping mission and set up “an American envoy to be sure U.S. actions reflect the urgency of the crisis.”
Genocide, rape, and displacement of thousands has been going on since 2003, and the Save Darfur Coalition was set up to keep our attention focused on the conflict until it is resolved. Our attention span is often very short when it comes to news stories like these, and African nations often get the least of Western attention. Please visit SaveDarfur.org, research the situation yourself (a good place to start), and stay updated on the news headlines to help.
