Jason Alba on rebranding yesterday:

About three weeks after launching [the Jibber Jobber site] I realized that I had to … can you believe it … rebrand! And you know what, it has been very difficult to get over the initial perception of “job search tool.” That’s kind of okay because it was optimized for those in a job search right now. But, once you get a job you should still take care of your network. You should still have target companies that you are tracking and monitoring. You should still keep your resume updated. You should still have elevator pitches. There are a lot of things that we all “should” do… we kind of perfect them during the job search process but once we get that job we go into “relax” mode and neglect our careers.

Your job hunt ideally should really never end. Jason is one-hundred-percent right: you should continue to cultivate a network of contacts, stay in touch with them, and nurture them, even when you don’t need anything from them! You need to keep your resume and your personal pitch current and competitive, just in case your job disappears, or something irresistible comes along.

All of this means you need to rebrand from time to time. Rebranding means saying to the world: “This is my new skill level, and these are the projects I’m good at.” Those things change over time, so it’s important to broadcast a brand that grows and changes with your skills and interests.

Thrilling Heroics’s identity has changed with time. New designs, new organization, new focuses. So take a hint from me and from Jason Alba, and don’t be afraid to rebrand yourself or your business from time to time. If you find that something isn’t working… Or if you need to adjust your focus to fit your needs and interests…

Cody, thanks for the shoutout :) I really like something that you wrote that I totally missed:

“don’t be afraid to rebrand yourself or your business from time to time”

Cool stuff, I’m sure I’ll be rebranding again and again.
