Hi Cody, I would greet you happy birthday, but I think that was 2 months ago…

I do want to thank you for this article. It made me realize a lot of things in my life. While I did graduate from college out of my parents’ income (well, college is a LOT cheaper when you’re in the Philippines anyway), I never got my sense of purpose in those 4 years.

So I’m taking a leap further and take your advice to build my own career. And I’d like to thank you for creating such wonderful content for guiding us through this journey.

P.S. Come visit the Philippines too. We also have great beaches here.

I believe that's pretty solid advice, thanks Kirsty. A degree will definitely improve you, no matter what, give you more education, a broader understanding of the world around you. However, when it's a significant investment, I also highly recommend young students take a year or two off before uni/college and think critically about what they want to do with their lives and what they'll get out of their degree. Unfortunately in a lot of careers, as you say, the degree is just the first barrier to entry, everyone has them now, so they no longer set you apart, you simply "need" one to compete, plus much more (higher degrees, experience, etc.). Because if you go to a 4-year degree program like the millions of other students every year, you're coming out of the program pretty much the same as the other millions of students every year. That's why I'm all for seeing more people build their own careers!

Most definitely agree with the college comment. I am £23,000 in debt from my university career. I studied an English degree, purely because of my love of literature and writing – I was told that irrespective of the subject, a degree would land me a good job.

This advice was wrong.

A year after graduating, I am only now getting some sort of idea of the line of work I want to go into – which is nothing to do with English/Languages etc – and worse still, I’ll have to do anotheer degree to be able to enter th profession!

My advice is wait until you really know what you want to do before undertaking degree. Chances are that you won’t even need a damn degree for it anyway!!

I wish I would have taken this advise about four years ago when I was starting college. I did not know what I really wanted to do with my life and had no idea who I was as a person. Now more than anything I want to travel and really get to know myself but I have one more year left of school until I graduate and many student loans I feel like I made the wrong decision because I’m not even really sure if becoming a teacher is what I really want to do. Anyways hope you take his advise because it is the best advise I have read. Cody, where ever you are, you have became my new hero!

My advice would be to work your ass off on one focused area of your life. My biggest regrets stem from having too much fun and not trying as hard as I could of. An extra 5 or 10 percent effort are often the only difference between good and great.

Partying and slacking are fun, but life is too short to screw around.
